Grit… you hear this word often in movies about detectives who are good at their job, or about down to earth “super heroes”, but not too often do you hear it about entrepreneurs.  The definition of grit nearly perfectly describes those qualities we admire in successful people, because mental toughness builds the foundations for long term success.

In an earlier blog post I talked about how to handle frequent rejection.  Well successful people know how to do that along with many other things.  Let’s talk about those things.

Here are ways you can become mentally stronger–and as a result more successful:

 

1. Always act as if you are in total control.

Many successful people do feel good luck played some role in their success.  It may be their own modesty coming into play, but ask them and they will say luck was involved in some way.

The big difference between them and the unsuccessful is that they didn’t wait for luck to find them but rather went looking for it.  They act and many know (consciously or subconsciously) as if success or failure is totally within their control. Act as though it is!

You can’t control luck, but you can definitely control you.

 

2. Set aside things you have no ability to impact.

Grit could also be considered mental strength.  Just like muscle strength, you don’t have an unlimited supply.  So spend it wisely, on the things that you can impact.

Whatever it is you can do, do it.  Figure out what you’re good at that will have a true impact on your business and do that.  Everything else find others who can handle it for you.  If you’re constantly trying to impact things you can’t or take a lot of time for you to do, you’re going to run out of mental strength eventually.

 

3. See the past as valuable training and nothing more.

The past is treasure trove of lessons for us to learn from.  Especially the mistakes we made.  Learn from those mistakes and let them allow you to be a better person, boss, family member, etc…

I have certainly made many mistakes in my time.  However, I have come to reflect upon those as stepping stones to what makes me… me!  I don’t dwell on them and let them control my life, instead I look for ways to use them to help me grow myself and my business.  Then I let them go!  It’s easier said than done, but when you start having more success from those lessons you learned it becomes significantly easier.

 

4. Celebrate ALL Wins (CAW!!!).

Celebrate Your Wins.

Celebrate Your Team’s Wins.

Celebrate Your Companies Wins.

Celebrate You Families Wins.

Celebrate ALL wins, regardless of how big or small they are.  Celebrating a win will give you an amazing boost of energy and sense of accomplishment.

 

5. Stop Whining (said in an Arnold Voice)

Those who know Detective John Kimble will get this, for the rest of you just google “stop whining”.  You can thank me later.

Every word you think and speak has power, especially over yourself.  Whining about your problems always makes you feel worse, not better.  It also accomplishes nothing, so why do it?

Remember number 2… put your mental strength towards solving the issue instead of whining about it.

 

6. Focus only on impressing yourself.

The people who will like you for your clothes, your car, your possessions, your title, or your accomplishments, are not the kind of people you want to associate with.  They bring nothing to your success, and the moment those things are no longer beneficial to them, the will be gone.

Be yourself, the people who matter will naturally be impressed that you’re real.  No one likes a fake person, so don’t be one.

 

7. Express Gratitude.

Take time every day to express what you’re grateful for.  You will be surprised at how uplifting this is.  Especially right before you go to bed or right before you wake up.  Doing it at both of these times can help set your state all day and all night.
