Actually in a matter of about one day, we hit #1 best seller in at least one category and catapulted all the way up to … It was like low 3000s in all Kindle books. There’s over a million books on Kindle right now, so I’m pretty excited about the fact that we hit 3000 out of a million different books for this bad boy.

Without each and every one of you guys doing that, it would not have been as big a success as it was, so I just want to acknowledge you guys. This is the book. Again, I wrote it for entrepreneurs specially to help them get out of their own way. A lot of the time, some of the things I’ve been dealing with myself, even just recently, and by the way, guys, getting out of your own way is a process. It doesn’t happen … It’s not like all of a sudden, you’re done and you’ve got it, you’ve figured it out. It’s going to take time. You’re going to constantly have to struggle with getting in your own way, especially when you’re smaller. As your business grows, it becomes less of an issue, but for many of us who are small business owners, we get stuck in that mindset, so it’s much more difficult for that to happen.

Again, I kind of want to go through a few things in here in relation to that. Again, in your book, there’s a lot more detail than I can go into here on Periscope. Obviously, it’s not a huge book. It’s about 100 pages or so, but there’s a lot of detail in here. I share a lot of stories about things that not only I have experienced, but other people I know have experienced. This is not just a book about myself and what I’ve done over the years. It’s also a book for and about a lot of other people as well.

The first thing I kind of want to dive into … And guys, if you have questions, feel free to ask them, I’ll be happy to answer any questions around business building, about getting out of your own way, the book, anything of that nature. The first thing is I want to talk a little bit about the philosophy of done is better than perfect and what that means for each of us as business owners and what it means for us to really embrace that philosophy of done is better than perfect.

I’ve got an entire chapter in here about this, but I think that this all started for me … I want to say back in 2010, 11, something like that. Probably actually ’11 or ’12. There was a picture of Mark Zuckerberg, and he’s walking around Facebook, and in the background is where you see this poster that says “Done is better than perfect.” A lot of people would never have noticed. They’re not looking at the background. They’re sitting there looking at Mark, about what he’s doing. They’re not necessarily searching the background.

That little piece there, it caught my attention, because at the end of the day, that little sign really kind of impacted a lot of how I thought about business and about some of the things I was doing at the time. I still had my full time job at that point, and was kind of looking to make a change. A lot of things in business weren’t necessarily going as well as I’d hope or thought they would. I just was like, man, that resonated with me for some reason. It really struck a chord in my head.

Again, it’s something that I kind of latched onto is hey, when we’re doing things as business owners, and we’re just getting started, we don’t have time for every single thing to be perfect. If we had time for everything to be perfect, everything would be. Every single business would be a success. Everything would be amazing. Realistically, we just don’t.

At the end of the day, if we’re trying to be perfect, nothing’s ever going to get done. We’re not going to meet deadlines. We’re not going to launch our product or business. We’re not going to launch that next service or that new clothing line or whatever it is that you’re working on as an entrepreneur. You’re not going to be able to launch that if you are constantly striving for everything to be perfect. I want you guys to think about getting things done more so than things being perfect. We’ll talk in a little bit about excellence over perfection, because I think that’s an important thing for you to keep in mind.

Again, keep that done is better than perfect in your head. Really, it kind of comes back to everything we do. Obviously, depending on what you do, like if you’re a doctor or something like that, this concept, this philosophy, does not apply for you. You need to be perfect, and if you’re cutting somebody open and you’re doing surgery, you kind of need to be perfect. If you, “Oh, yeah, I forgot about that cotton ball,” well, someone might die.

For many of us as entrepreneurs, we’re not making life and death decisions on a daily basis. We’re not doing anything even close to that. We’re just trying to say, “Hey, can I put this marketing campaign out?” “Is this webpage good enough?” “Is my logo okay? Can we just get it up and on there?” Things like that. That’s kind of what it’s all about, is thinking to yourself, “Hey, where is that line?”

I talk a lot in the book about the 80/20 rule, the Pareto Principle which comes back again and again and again. Not just in one thing, but in a lot of things. It constantly comes back. It is that Pareto Principle. We sit here, and we say to ourselves, “Hey, at one point is something done enough for me to consider it done enough?” Realistically, about 20% of the effort you’re going to put into doing anything in your business is going to result in the 80% of the results. A lot of times, that 80% is all you need to be more successful. It’s all you need to take things from here to here or even higher. If you’re not thinking about it that way, if you’re not looking at it that way, you’re not doing it that way, then it’s going to be a little bit different.

That’s where the philosophy sort of started for me. Then it just kind of blossomed from there. Thank you, Lacey, I appreciate that. It just kind of blossomed from there. It kind of went from just an idea to something I started noticing. It wasn’t shortly there after that I began speaking in a lot of different capacities. I was at a lot of different events. I’m talking to a lot of different entrepreneurs. In the last three years, it’s been, at this point, a little over 3000 entrepreneurs that I’ve talked to in the last few years.

One thing, one single thing, always seemed to permeate every conversation I was having with these new entrepreneurs. Every single time I would talk to them, I would … It was this one thing, and it was this concept that they were in their own way, that they kept getting in their own way, that they couldn’t seem to get out of their own way. It would be … A lot of the people that I’ve spoken to in the last three years, a lot of those folks have been just getting their business started. They’re just getting going. They’re just making things happen. It’s funny. They get caught up on the littlest, tiny things.

Literally, I had one lady one time, she still hadn’t finalized her logo. Had been in business for like 7 or 8 months, or maybe it was even 9 months. I forget exactly how long, but it was quite a bit of time, and wasn’t done with her logo yet. When she pulled it up, I said, “What’s wrong with your logo? It looks good.” She pulled out like literally 50 tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny little things that she wasn’t happy with on that logo that honestly I never would’ve even noticed unless she had specifically pointed them out to me.

That’s what I’m talking about. That’s the kind of things. Where it’s like you’re seven months into your business, and you’re still fucking around with your logo. Excuse my language, but you’re still messing around with your logo. That’s not okay, guys. You can’t do that. That’s just … You’ve got to move on at some point and say, “Okay, it’s good enough for now. I can always get it done or change it later, but it’s done enough for now,” because at the end of the day, your logo is not going to sell your product.

Your logo isn’t going to make you do better. Your logo is simply there as an extension of your brand, for something for people to recognize it. Unless your logo’s like a freaking Nazi symbol or something like that, nobody’s even going to even really care. They’re going to see your logo and go, “Okay, cool.” If you have a really awesome logo, they might go, “Oh, that’s kind of cool.” That’s it, and it’s gone. It’s out of their mind. They’re not going to be sitting here going, for the next six hours, analyzing your logo and using it to make a decision about whether or not their going to buy your product, your service, or whatever it is you’re offering.

You can’t spend that much time on things like that. You’ve got to get things done. It’s something like that. Really it was that particular lady that I talked to that kind of sparked this in my head of wow. Then I started thinking back to a lot of the conversations that I was having and a lot of the people I’m talking to, and I’m helping them build their business and get further along and do better, but there’s always something that seems to prevent them from getting a little bit further, and it was themselves. [inaudible 00:11:26]

This is a perfect example. This lady’s logo was 100% done. It was good. Maybe she had a few problems or issues with it, things like that, who cares? It’s small things at that point. You shouldn’t be worrying about those. You have to really embrace that philosophy of what you’re doing and how you’re doing it and just get out of your own way and realize that done is truly better than perfect when it comes to starting your business.

When you bring on employees and things like that, obviously we want them to embrace this to a certain extent. When you’re a small company, you still have to embrace this, even when you have employees that you’re bringing on or team members or contractors or whoever it is that you’re working with. However, keep in mind that again, this kind of stuff, it’s important for everybody in your company, not just you.

The next thing I kind of want to dive into in a little bit more detail is about where does this idea of perfectionism come from? One of the questions, the first question I asked when I was writing the book when I was out … Not even writing the book, but when I started the outline of the book, I said, “Why is this happening? Why is there so many people that start a business, and then get stuck with this getting in their own way? How is that there’s so many folks that have this same problem?”

Again, it wasn’t just out of the thousands I’ve talked to, it wasn’t just like one or two or three. Literally, I could probably count in a class of 100 people, there would be 60-70 of them easily that would be doing things that were getting in their own way. It was very prevalent. So where does this idea of perfectionism come from? In the book, I dive into it in a heck of a lot more detail, but at the end of the day, it all starts for many of us when we’re kids, as we start growing up.

Really, it begins for many of us in Kindergarten and all the way through our primary education years in schooling. We’re taught at that age that perfect is what we need to be. We want to achieve that 100%. Welcome, Joey, good to have you on. We want to achieve that 100%. We want to make sure that we have that A, that A+, or the 100% numerical grade. We start thinking to ourselves that’s what it is, and a lot of times our parents and other people will praise us based on that 100%, how close did we get to that 100%, that perfect number.

This is fine for the average person. Most people out there will be totally happy with being employees, but for those of you watching this, for those of you who are going to pick up this book, this is not for the average employee. It’s not for the average person. This is for the entrepreneur who wants to do better in their life. This is for the person who wants to build something, a business for themselves. For those of us that are in that state, perfection is more of a disease than it is something we should look up to. Again, it comes all the way back to that primary school years.

Then you kind of just fed that over and over and over. Again, like I said, for most of us, that’s what the schooling system was designed to do. It was there, designed for us, to become employees, initially to go work in factories. That was when most of the education that still prevails today was built and designed was around getting people to go get factory jobs. A lot of people still had that [inaudible 00:15:06] go to school, get good grades, study hard, get a good job.

That works for the large majority people, but for those of us who are entrepreneurs, we have to change that mindset. We have to switch things around. We have to switch our thinking. If we don’t do that, we’re going to be stuck and continuously getting in our own way every single day in the tiniest little ways. A lot of times the minutia things, that’s what’s going to get us the most. That’s what’s going to trip us up the most is those little things like that.

That’s really where it starts from. It just kind of continues on. You think as you go through this, and you get to college, same thing in college. A lot of it’s grade based, not based in anything else. Actually, interestingly enough, I just saw a story about a guy from MIT. He dropped out of MIT, and he started his own school. I don’t believe it’s accredited yet, because it’s not exactly a standard school, but the idea behind his school is that you pay nothing to go to school, but you pay them after you get a job or after you start your company.

You start paying them at that point in time. They earn a certain percentage of whatever you earn as a salary or whatever, so that it’s incentivizing them to give you the best possible education that’s going to be the most useful in the real world, versus just learning a bunch of stuff, because it was on some curriculum from God knows when that someone thinks we need to know, even though the moment we leave school, we will probably forget it. In fact, the moment we leave that class and pass the final test, we will probably forget it, and never need to know it again.

Very interesting. I think there’s a lot of interesting things happening out there in that world of schooling. You see the student debt problem kind of rising up, things like that. That’s not what this is about, but I think there’s going to be a lot of changes on the horizon for that. I think what you’re going to see is that the education system’s going to need to kind of need to change to fit today’s day and age. For those of us as entrepreneurs, the further that we’ve been in that mindset, the further you’ve had that job where you need to be perfect, things like that, it’s going to be even harder for those people.

Indeed, one of the things I’ve noticed when I started outlining this book and thinking about this process and what it meant for a lot of people, the people who tended to be the most in their own way were the ones who were the oldest. It kind of makes sense, right? They had the most amount of schooling. Most of them had full time jobs for a long time, especially the ones who went 30+ years working at a company, or multiple companies, whatever it’s going to be. Then they left. Now they’re starting their own business.

Those are the ones who tended to get in their way the most, because they were the ones that as an employee for so long, as a school child for so long, that’s what they were taught. So they don’t know any different. A lot of times, they don’t even realize they’re getting in their own way. That’s the scary part, right, guys? Is that people don’t even realize they’re getting in their own way. That’s crazy to me. This is kind of where that idea of perfection comes from.

The last thing I want to talk about is in relation to excellence over perfection. I think this is probably … Realistically, this is probably one of the most important chapters in the book. I [inaudible 00:18:28] what chapter it is. I think it’s like chapter 10. There’s a table of contents in here. One of these says excellence over perfection. In here, I have 10 different ways that you can overcome perfection and stride for excellence. I’m not going to go through all 10 here on this Periscope, because we’ve already been going for about 20 minutes, and I was trying to keep this to about 30 minutes or so.

A few things that I do want to talk about this. First and foremost, the idea of excellence is not defined by you. It’s defined by exterior factors. This is going to be, for example, your customers. It’s going to be the people that you work with. This is going to be the people who talk about your business, your fan base. Those are the folks who are going to find what excellence is in your business. You should have your own idea of what it is. You should be being like excellent, this is what I’m going to do, this is what I’m going to work towards. Here’s the idea.

But ultimately, excellence is defined by external factors, not by internal factors, whereas perfection is the other way around. Perfection is defined by you, not necessarily by anybody else. This is an interesting thing for you to note. Hey, Sarah, how’s it going? Thank you for joining in.

The interesting thing to note about this is that because perfection is defined by you and excellence is defined by others, it should make sense for us to not want to be perfectionists, but rather to be excellent-ist. If that’s a thing. I’m going to make up words. Sounds good. Excellent-ist. That’s what we should be striving for is that excellence over that perfection.

What’s interesting is that because you define perfection, no matter what, even if you were to achieve perfect, which there’s always going to be something that you could do better, something you could tweak, some little, tiny change you can make, something of that nature. Even if you were to achieve perfection in what you’re working on, what’s perfect for you might not be perfect for somebody else. That’s something that a lot of people don’t realize is that they think everything needs to be perfect, but if it’s perfect for you, someone else might hate it. They may think it’s terrible.

Case in point, with this cover design here, my mom, who I think was on, I don’t know if she still is, but she wrote back, and my sister as well, that they really didn’t like the cover. It didn’t make sense to them. They didn’t get it. The funny part to me is that I absolutely love this cover, and the audience that I was going for, they loved the cover. The feedback on this particular cover, this design out of all the other designs that I had for the cover of this book, this one did the best, which is interesting. I thought it was pretty close to perfect, but somebody else didn’t like it.

That’s the point, guys, is that we define perfect, not somebody else. Rather than trying to be perfect in everything we do, it’s much more important to be excellent in everything we do and to build excellence. One of the case studies that I give here in the book about excellence over perfection is the iPhone. For those of you guys who know me, you know I am not an Apple person. In fact, I own zero Apple products. Actually, no, that’s not true. I do own one iPod that I got for free when I bought into a coaching program, and I think I used it for about a week, and then I never touched it again.

Despite the fact of my own personal preferences about Apple devices, or Apple as a company, you have to admit that they put out really great stuff. Their iPhone is amazing. There’s a lot to love about it. There’s a reason that all of us have all these smartphones. You’re watching me right now on a device where you can tap a screen, which by the way, if you tap it, give me some love, appreciate it. It responds to your touch. That was Apple’s first design. They made that.

If you look at every single phone as it comes out that Apple produces out there, is it perfect? Not by a long shot. Every single time there’s a phone that comes out … In fact, Samsung, one of the big things that they do is they say, “Hey, look at all the stuff that we have that Apple didn’t put in their phone.” That’s what they keep saying. Samsung’s phrasing is “the next big thing is here.” They use that phrasing, because they know they have to compete with Apple somehow. They try to compete on features on their phone, say, “Look, our phones do all these things that the Apple phones don’t.”

If Apple was in their own way, if they were trying to be perfectionists, they would see that as a huge threat. They would have to be like, “Oh man, we’ve got to go back to the drawing board. We got to put all these things in our phone, because if we don’t have them, it’s not going to be perfect and whatever.” They would never release a phone, because there’s always new features. There’s always new things you can add to a phone. There’s always something else that can be crammed into this little 5 inch device right here.

What’s important to note is that even though they may not be perfect, their product is still excellent. The iPhone is an excellent phone. Why? Just look at the sales numbers. That alone should tell you right there that it’s an excellent product. They’re selling literally millions of them, millions of phones. In fact, I think it’s even in the hundreds of millions of phones just for the iPhone 6 and 6s. That should tell you right there.

That’s something I want you to keep in mind every single time you think you’re getting in your own way, you’re thinking about this, you think you might be in your own way is I’m a putting out something that’s excellent or am I trying to put out something that’s perfect? A lot of times, the bar for excellence is a lot lower than the bar for perfect for each of us. That’s okay. Think of the iPhone. Perfect iPhone would be here, iPhone released here, still a huge success. Doesn’t have to be here. It can be here. I want you to keep that in mind. Think about that.

Lacey asked, “Do you think being transparent about your business process and mistakes is beneficial?” Great question. Do I think being transparent is beneficial? Absolutely. I could not agree more that it is. If you look at the world of what we’re doing, everyone tries to put on this mask of perfection. Hey, look at me, I’m perfect. I won’t lie. I’m guilty of this just as much as everybody else is. A lot of times I share the awesome things that are going on, not necessarily the bad things that are going on in my life or in my business or whatever is happening out there.

For example, here’s my book. We launched this book on Wednesday. It hit #1 in one category. It hit #2 in two different categories, and hit #3600-something overall out of all Kindle books. That, in a way, is sort of that mask of saying, “Hey, here’s how good it did.” I’ll be straight with you. It hit #1 in one category. It didn’t go #1 overall on Amazon. It didn’t go #1 everywhere, but that’s okay. It’s still a great book. I still think it’s an excellent book. I’m sure there’s some mistakes in here.

In fact, I found one mistake with one of my links. It’s done. It’s out there. We’re just going to work through that. It’s okay. The link will still work. We’ll make it work. We’ll go from there. You’re always going to find those mistakes. If you own them and you’re transparent about those mistakes and the struggles that you’ve had as you’ve been coming along with whatever you’re doing, people appreciate that. It’s called authenticity. People want authentic experiences with so much content.

Here’s something that a lot of people, I think, struggle with sometimes is they say, “I’ve got this great idea, but there’s like a million other people out there doing that. Why are they going to want to come to my stuff, look at my things, look at me or buy my product or do my stuff, because there’s a million other people out there that are doing the same thing?” The answer is that authenticity. Yeah, people can get any …

Literally, this book, there is nothing in this book that is groundbreaking, new, mind blowing, exploding ideas. There’s nothing in this book. I’ll be straight with you right now. There is nothing in this book that is going to fundamentally shift the entire world, because I wrote this book, but I didn’t write this book to shift the entire world. I wrote this book to give you my take, my personal take on getting out of your own way through my own stories, people that I’ve talked to, experiences that I’ve had, and that’s what I’m sharing with you.

I’m sharing with you my journey of getting out of my own way and the people that I talk to through that. There’s pieces in here where I talk about mistakes made and failures that I’ve had and things like that, and that’s okay. You’ve got to own those failures, and let people know about them. It just helps them think that you’re more real. What is interesting enough is that when you share those things with other people, they appreciate it. They go, “Oh man, this guy is just like me. He’s not some perfect person on a pedestal that has never done a single thing wrong and is just amazing at everything. He’s a real guy.” That helps them connect with you a whole lot more, and that breeds excellence, being transparent.

Actually, I don’t even have that in here. I might have to add that in the revised second version is just being transparent, I think, is a great way to build excellence, because are going to say, “Oh look, he failed, he failed, he failed. Now he had a success, then maybe he failed again, then here’s a success. Then failure, then success, success, then fail.” People love to know that.

Excellence over perfection is always, always, always going to be a critical piece. Again, in here, I give you a whole bunch of different ways to do that. A couple in here that I just want to share that I think are probably some of the more impactful ones from this book. #1 is gratitude. I think gratitude is so important. It’s something that I may not have really embraced a lot before, but really in the last year, a year and a half, I’ve been trying to, as much as possible, be grateful for everything. I do a lot of things.

For example, I try to every single day journal. I don’t always journal every single day. I’ll be straight with you. It’s probably, realistically about 3, maybe 4 times a week for 5, 10 minutes if that. I just try to write down a few things that I’m grateful for in the journal about what’s happening. I think when you have that attitude in your mindset, you change it to say you’re grateful for what you have and what you’re doing and what you have the ability to do, all of a sudden, your perspective on the world changes and opportunities open up all of a sudden, because now all of a sudden it’s not just about me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, it’s about thank you, guys. You should notice …

What I hope you notice, at least, is that in every single post about this book in the last few days that I’ve been putting out there and I’ve been doing, I say thank you, because it’s people like you, you guys right now on Periscope, if you guys are watching the Replay, it’s each and every one of you, if you’re catching this on YouTube or on Facebook after the fact, it’s about each and every one of you guys as well, because I couldn’t write this book, I wouldn’t get to a best seller status unless it was for each and every one of you, so I always try to say thank you.

I don’t know if you noticed in this or not, maybe you have in your copy, but the book starts out with acknowledgements, and I acknowledge right in here the people that had the biggest impact on this book. Straight up, the first people thanked in here are my parents, because without them, I wouldn’t be here. Without them supporting me in a million different ways, both growing up and ideas and the way they raised me and all of that, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. They supported me financially through college. They continuously, every single day of the week, they support me.

I want to thank those people that have impacted me the most. I think, as you do that, you’ll find that people appreciate that, and also, because excellence is defined externally and not internally, that appreciation leads to excellence, because there’s no other way for it. When someone gets that appreciation, that gratitude from you, they can’t help but go, “Oh man, that feels good. It feels like yes.” It feels nice. I think that’s a big piece of what this is.
